Cora and Clemence, oil on canvas, by Arthur Watson Sparks, American 1870-1919.

At the Grand Hotel, a one room art gallery is currently displaying a selection of American artist paintings from the Manoogian collection. Richard and Jane Manoogian began collecting American art in the 1970s after Richard became a trustee of the Detroit Institute of the Arts. Richard says, "To some extent my collection has been driven by wanting to share these paintings with others as a way of giving back to the country that has been so good to me and my family."

Portrait of a Young Girl and Dog, 1869, Oil on canvas, Thomas Waterman Wood, American, 1823-1903

In the Grand Hotel collection, this piece was not labeled. However, i believe it is an Everett Shinn, American, 1876-1953. He was part of the American Realist and Ashcan School whose subject matter often included theater and dance hall scenes in the style of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
