JANICE'S ARTIST STATEMENT

"I feel most at home under the sky, painting modern impressionistic works, capturing the essence of nature’s beauty. My ambition, to capture the dance of light and shadow, bringing a scene to life with movement that guides the eye and stirs the spirit.

My technique is a blend of thin brushed layers crowned by the spontaneity of bold palette knife textures. When outside of my Illinois studio, my favorite places to paint en plein air are along the coasts. Time seems to stand still when I paint under the sun in a warm breeze, with the soothing sounds of waves rolling in.

While on location I take reference photos then refer to these and my plein air studies for larger studio paintings. In my modern impressionistic approach, I use my creative license to enhance compositions and simplify the scene.

More than representations, my pieces are invitations to wander the canvas and find connection to the Divine poetry found in nature."

Beginning stages of this painting took place along the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. The tide came rushing in as I painted causing us to pack up and finish in my studio.
