Gergana Horozova describes her artistic style as passionate impressionism using expansive brush strokes. No matter how she may try to categorize her work, it is thoughtfully executed and beautifully done.
Born and raised in Bulgaria, she formally studied architecture while always creating art. Although she prefers the medium of oil, over the last three years she’s embarked upon a dedicated watercolor journey. She says she believes working in watercolor has improved her oil painting especially when it comes to color mixing.
Landscapes continue to be her go-to subject choice with Still Life following close behind. One method she particularly enjoys is painting “ala prima”. This is when she completes a piece all in one sitting citing that whatever happens, happens. You sign it, and it’s done. It’s expressive and it’s fast.
Additionally, she enjoys arranging a still life, saying. “It’s almost like arranging actors on a stage. I play with all the elements until I get the composition I want just right.”
Gergana teaches at various locations in the area and believes anyone can paint. It just takes practice. She also appreciates how her students continually inspire her.
“By building an inventory of work, a student starts developing their own unique style,” she says. “Also, making alliances with other artists through memberships in art organizations, helps students develop their talent even more as they gather input from others. It’s so important to surround yourself with creative people so you can remain open to new things.”
She continues, “I like helping my students overcome themselves – to get past their own self-imposed talent boundaries. It’s important for a teacher to show belief in her students letting them express their own style and not stifling them. So many times, when they look at their work 24 hours later, they see it in a more positive way – no longer focusing on perceived imperfections.”
Gergana likens the creative journey to traveling along the art highway with different exits leading you to different creative options.
She concludes, “You always want to paint with your soul.”
